Current Roll-Out Status

NBI, the company responsible for delivering Ireland’s National Broadband Plan, has recently announced significant milestones in the project’s roll-out. CEO Peter Hendrick has stated that the project is "on budget and on schedule," despite past criticisms and delays. By the end of this year, NBI aims to pass 300,000 premises with high-speed fibre broadband.

Key Achievements

  • Surveying Phase: Over 500,000 premises included in the Irish Government’s intervention area have completed the initial surveying phase.

  • Ready for Connection: 243,000 premises are now ready to connect to the network.

  • Focus on Construction: The majority of NBI’s resources are currently dedicated to the physical construction of the fibre network.

Goals and Impact

The National Broadband Plan aims to connect over 1.1 million people across 564,000 homes, businesses, farms, and schools in Ireland, particularly in areas where commercial operators do not provide high-speed connectivity. This initiative is crucial for bridging the digital divide and ensuring that rural communities have access to the opportunities provided by high-speed internet.

Statement from NBI CEO

Peter Hendrick, NBI CEO, emphasised the transformative impact of high-speed fibre broadband:

“Access to high-speed fibre broadband is life-changing for rural communities. It opens up opportunities for education, remote work, and business development, ensuring that no one is left behind in the digital age.”

Challenges and Criticisms

Despite recent progress, NBI has faced criticism for changing targets and delays in the past. For instance, a report by the Committee of Public Accounts (PAC) in April 2022 highlighted concerns about the project's value for money and noted that the initial targets were not met. However, NBI has since implemented remedial plans and continues to work towards its goals.
