Before Q4 Hits - 5 Questions Every Irish Business Should Ask About Their Broadband

August is the quietest month in the Irish business calendar.
It is also the best time to look at things that get ignored when it is busy. Your connectivity setup is one of them.
Q4 brings busier trading periods, end-of-year deadlines and increased pressure on every system in your business. It is not the time to discover your broadband is not up to the job.
Most Irish businesses have never had a proper broadband review. They ordered connectivity when they needed it and have not looked seriously at it since.
That is fine when everything is running smoothly. But the right time to review is not when something goes wrong under pressure. It is now, when there is time to make a considered decision.
Work through these five questions. If you can answer yes to all five with confidence, your setup is in good shape going into Q4. If any give you pause, it is worth a conversation with Fastcom before the busy period arrives.
Do you know what broadband speed your business is actually getting?
What to check
Not the speed on the brochure when you signed up. The actual speed your connection delivers on a busy Tuesday morning when your team is on video calls, your cloud systems are syncing and files are being uploaded. Run a speed test at speedtest.net during peak hours and compare the result with your package.
Why it matters
Upload speed matters as much as download speed in 2026. Cloud software, video calling and real-time collaboration all push significant data upstream. If your upload speed is slow, every system that depends on it slows down with it. Most Irish businesses have never checked.
The honest answer
If your actual speed is significantly lower than your contracted speed, or lower than what your team needs to work effectively, that gap is costing you productivity every single day.
If your broadband went down right now, what would happen?
What to check
Think through it honestly. Would card payments stop? Would cloud software become inaccessible? Would your phone system go silent? Would remote workers lose access to shared systems? For most Irish businesses, the answer is yes to several of these.
Why it matters
Every fixed broadband line fails eventually. A fault at the local exchange, a cable cut during roadworks, a hardware issue at the premises. These events are unpredictable. A 4G or 5G backup connection activates automatically within seconds of a primary line failure and keeps the business online until the fault is resolved.
The honest answer
If you do not have a backup connection in place, your business is one unplanned outage away from a day of lost trading. That is not a risk most Irish businesses have consciously chosen to carry.
How long did it take to resolve the last problem with your broadband?
What to check
Think back to the last time something went wrong with your connection. Was there a direct number to call? Did someone answer? Was the fault resolved in hours or days? The answer tells you whether you have a genuine business-grade SLA.
Why it matters
A business-grade SLA is a formal written commitment from your provider specifying exactly how quickly they will respond and resolve a fault. For a business that depends on its internet connection, that commitment should be measured in hours. If your current provider does not have one, or if you do not know what yours says, that is the first thing to check.
The honest answer
Support quality is invisible until something goes wrong. By then, the cost in downtime and lost productivity is already being paid. Knowing what you are covered for before Q4 is significantly better than finding out during it.
Has your broadband kept up with how your business has grown?
What to check
The connection you ordered two or three years ago was designed for the team and the systems you had then. Since then, you may have added staff, moved more software to the cloud, started using video calling daily, opened a second location or expanded to remote working. Each of those changes increases the demand on your connection.
Why it matters
Full fibre broadband is now available to the majority of Irish business premises. The National Broadband Plan continues to extend coverage to rural areas. If you have not checked availability at your address in the last 12 months, the options open to you may be significantly better than what you are currently on.
The honest answer
A broadband connection that was right for your business in 2022 may be the reason things feel slower in 2026. Not a bad day. Not a slow server. A connection that has not kept up with the business it is serving.
Is your connectivity as simple to manage as it should be?
What to check
Count the providers involved in your current connectivity setup. Broadband from one. Mobile SIMs from another. Phone system from a third. A backup nobody is quite sure who manages. Different bills, different renewal dates, different support lines. When something goes wrong, time is spent working out who to call before anyone starts fixing it.
Why it matters
Managing all connectivity through a single partner means one bill, one renewal conversation, one support line and one point of contact. For businesses with multiple locations or a growing team, this simplicity has real operational value that compounds over time.
The honest answer
Complexity in a connectivity setup is not just inconvenient. Every additional provider relationship adds administrative overhead, increases the risk of gaps between services and makes it harder to get a clear picture of what your business is actually paying for its connectivity.
What to Do If Any of These Gave You Pause
These five questions are not designed to create problems. They are designed to surface ones that already exist before Q4 puts pressure on everything.
If any of them revealed a gap in your speed, your resilience, your support, your technology or your setup, the next step is straightforward.
